Rabbi David Gellman
For the last 15 years, I have offered spiritual guidance for interfaith or multi-faith individuals in Toronto and the Golden Horseshoe area. In addition to being a spiritual leader in the Jewish faith, I perform all services in the faith. Since 2008, I have officiated at many weddings, some interfaith, some not, but each with its own story.
When I decided to become a Rabbi, it would be to serve the unaffiliated and interfaith community because I believe in breaking down the barriers that divide us, And so it became very important to find a facility that would take a more Universalist approach to Rabbinical training.
My Rabbi training occurred through an institution in New York, which has allowed me to offer services anywhere. During this time, I focussed on all elements and branches of the faith, from Reform to Orthodox, from Humanistic to Conservadox, allowing me to blend parts of all ceremonies. Many people have asked me why I chose to become a Rabbi. It was always a dream of mine ever since I was a child, and my experience working at the Spiritual Center made it clear that people needed a Rabbi who could perform Interfaith wedding ceremonies so that people could hold onto the spiritual elements of their genetic makeup that are important to them. No one should be told they cannot hold onto their faith.
The training I received gives me the flexibility to perform ceremonies for followers of all branches of Judaism, which many Rabbis in Toronto may not have or be comfortable with.
Over the years, more and more Jewish people marry outside the faith. This has created a significant schism and loss in the religion and a great demand for Interfaith marriage officiating. Many want to embrace their Jewish roots but find it too difficult to have a ceremony performed that reflects this. Instead, many end up turning away from the essence of their soul’s desire. My education and experience allow me to weave in elements of Judaism that make each wedding unique and memorable for both the couple and guests.
I am available for weddings across Toronto and throughout Ontario, Canada, and the United States. Services can be performed in synagogues, halls, homes, backyards, and wherever else your heart takes you.
